What is a Bill?

Stray produces four main bills throughout the year. Each bill has an open submission to any members who wish to write and/or direct a production. These get selected throughout the year.

We will be opening submissions for Original Bill and Stir-Fried in the near future, so stay tuned!

Classical Bill

Previously referred to as 'Historical Bill', the Classical Bill  play that will be selected will be considered historical or a modern classic.

Previous shows that have fit this bill have been:

  • Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka

  • Much Ado About Nothing by William Shakespeare

Our Classical Bill for 2023 is 'The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui' written by Bertolt Brecht and directed by Lerato Islam.

Contemporary Bill

Previously referred to as 'Main Bill',  the Contemporary Bill play that will be selected will be considered 'modern', either by its themes or the playwright themselves.

Previous shows that have fit this bill have been:

  • Animal adapted by Arlo Green

  • The Mooncake and the Kūmara by Mei-Lin Hansen

Our Contemporary Bill for 2023 is 'Low Pay? Don't Pay!' written by Dario Fo and directed by Thomas Julyan.

Original Bill

A play will be selected that is originally scripted by a Stray member. This is a script that has not been performed before and is making its stage debut.

Previous shows that have fit this bill have been:

  • A Shot in the Dark by Joseph Hisayasu

  • Is This All That You Had In Mind? by Katie Harris

Stir Fried

Stir-Fried is Stray's annual short play festival. 2023 marks the 15th anniversary of this crowd favourite tradition.

Original short plays are submitted by Stray members and are linked together by a well crafted 'framework'.
