Roles within Stray!

Are you considering joining a Stray Theatre Show but are unsure about the roles within a Stray Theatre Production? Here is a rundown of some of the different options and what to expect when you join a Stray show under these positions. 

Cast Member

A cast member helps to bring the script to life on stage with the guidance of the director. They attend regular rehearsals and then peform the show for an audience in show week.

Producer

The producer handles the budget and the admin of the show. They manage the cast and crew and are the first point of call for members of the show. The producer selects the submission for the shows and ususally works alongside a co-producer and production manager. 

Production Manager

The production manager role is great for people who want to learn the ropes of producing. They provide adminstrative support for the show and also manage the crew. This means attended regular core-production meetings and organising crew meetings.

Director

The director of the show provides the creative vision. They work with the cast during rehearsals, to bring the scripted piece onto the stage and they work with the crew to make sure the directorial vision is achieved. They attend weekly rehearsals and they meet with crew members to discuss the overall vision of the show.

Lighting and Sound Designer/Operator

Lighting and Sound Designers work with the director to create translate their goals with the show into sound and lighting. Designing is a technical role that is not best suited to beginners, but operating light/sound is a great way to get into doing tech for theatre. Operators run the tech during performances, learning the sound and lighting changes to bring the designers' work and vision to life. 

Costume and Makeup Designer

The costume and makeup designer communicate with the director to achieve the vision of the play. They have to attend regular crew meetings and follow agreed upon deadlines. They also have to communicate with the cast about sizing and comfort.

Set Designer and Props Manager

The set designer and the props manager work together to achieve the set and props requirements for the show. They attend regular crew meetings and work with the director to achieve their vision. This can involve creating new pieces or sourcing them.

Stage Manager

The stage manager familarize themselves with the show and attend rehearsals taking notes on significant timings. This can include costume changes, exits and entrances, also props and set pieces on stage. They are relied on during show week to manage the backstage area. Making sure everyone is on stage with what they need for the scene.
